Library Update – Jan. 2010 January 20, 2010
It is hard to believe but 2009 is over and 2010 has begun. We are looking forward to another exciting year in the library but first here is a quick update on all that is going on in the Meadows Library.
One of the biggest events of the school year was the recent Family Space Night hosted by several Meadows teachers and volunteers. I was pleased to be a small part of the evening as I greeted students with constellation myth information at the mini-planetarium. The kids and parents were so enthusiastic!! We’ve been capitalizing on that interest by displaying lots of space books and reading One Giant Leap and Ham the Astrochimp.
We continued our participation in the California Young Reader Medal Award by reading Do Onto Otters and My Life as a Chicken. We offered a well rounded selection of holiday books including Hanukkah at Valley Forge and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. After the break, we read books about snow and winter, A Penguin Story, First Day of Winter, and Very Hairy Bear. Fourth and Fifth graders were challenged to complete a library terms crossword puzzle and I am pleased that students are familiar with items such as “plagiarism”, “biography”, and “glossary.”
Check out the new book, Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns about Mud and Rainbows by Howard Binkow. Meadows students and I are thanked on the acknowledgement page. Copes are available for check-out in the library.
The PTA Book Fair in November was a great opportunity for me to guide both parents and students to some great new books. I also enjoyed the chance for more relaxed conversation with students about what they are reading. I was especially pleased to see that many of the book fair favorites are part of the Meadows Library collection. Thanks PTA!!
Meadows Library circulated over 6,000 books so far this year. A big shout out to all the volunteers who helped re-shelve all those books! Also, a big thank-you to all the parents and students who donated to the staff scrip collection. It is such a pleasure to belong to this generous and thoughtful community.
The MBEF annual appeal is coming to a close. Please make your donation today – so many programs, including the library, would not be here without your continued help. Give to MBEF today.
Thanks for your continued support of the Meadows Library!
